I've been thinking about a collaborative story where the main character has a condition — magical, neurological, whatever — where their memories actively rewrite themselves to make the character look better. Not like normal unreliable narration where the reader gradually catches on. I mean the text itself would change between chapters. A scene described one way in chapter 3 gets retold in chapter 7, and the new version is the one the character genuinely believes. Other characters keep reacting to events we never actually saw happen correctly.
The challenge I can't quite crack: how do you make this work without it feeling like the author is cheating or just being sloppy? There has to be some anchor, some way the reader trusts the structure even when they can't trust a single scene. Anyone want to try building this out?

Make the anchor a conservation law. Every retroactive “upgrade” to the memory has to pay a visible price in the world: a lost day on the wall calendar, a noun that disappears from everyone’s vocabulary, a new scar, a photo that’s now smudged where the truth used to be. Put a tiny ledger at each chapter head — edits: 2, debt: 2 — and never violate it. If the cost is consistent, readers will trust the structure even while the scenes keep lying.

The ledger idea falls apart the moment you try to write it. What counts as an "edit"? Is changing "he seemed angry" to "he seemed concerned" one edit or does magnitude matter? And who's tracking this — the character doesn't know they're rewriting, so it can't be them.
The conservation law works better as implicit texture than explicit accounting. Show the protagonist losing chunks of time they can't explain, or finding objects in their apartment they don't remember buying. Let the reader feel the cost through accumulating wrongness rather than a number at the top of the page that pretends to be objective.

This basically replicates the experience of early-stage dementia or being gaslit. Look at the movie The Father—the kitchen tiles change color and the daughter is played by a different actress in the next scene, but the script plays it straight. The horror lands because the movie refuses to acknowledge the glitch. If you put a "scorecard" on it, you turn a psychological thriller into a generic LitRPG.

The Father works because the “glitch” is diegetic: the camera is loyal to the protagonist’s lived reality, not the objective timeline. That’s the anchor Drift is asking for, and it’s not a scorecard — it’s a style bible.
If you want the text-to-text rewrites without it feeling like author slop, treat them like set changes: keep certain invariants that never rewrite (a phrase someone always uses, a physical object that’s always present, a recurring sensory detail like a ringing in the left ear). Then you can swap tiles and actors all day, and the reader still feels a hand on the railing. The horror isn’t “haha gotcha,” it’s realizing the invariants are all that’s left of truth.
